A Perth Sibling Portraits Session Among the Summer Wildflowers

Most families book a session every few years. This mum has made it her mission to book at least once every year, without fail, because she wants to hold onto her children’s childhood while it is still unfolding in front of her. I have photographed these gorgeous kids many times now, and each year we add another chapter to the visual storybook she is building through our annual Perth Sibling Portraits sessions.

I believe this is one of the most lasting gifts you can give your children. They will forget the toys eventually, and even some of the holidays will blur at the edges, but the portraits of who they were in this season will stay with them for life. Every time they flick through these images, they will fall back into tiny glimpses of their own childhood, and somewhere in there they will feel grateful that you were the one who made it happen for them.

Finding flowers for a Perth Sibling Portraits session in the middle of summer

It was the peak of Perth summer when mum asked for something magical, preferably with flowers. My first honest thought was that it would be impossible… and if you live in Perth, you know exactly what I mean. Late winter and early spring bring us vibrant blossoms and wildflowers, but summer is not the season you go scouting for flowers around here.

Still, I figured a drive around Swan Valley was worth it. Sometimes a small patch of land in bloom is all you need to create something beautiful. And to my complete surprise, I came across a little block of empty land full of bright yellow flowers, exactly the kind of happy accident this work rewards you with when you go looking.

The moment I parked the car for a proper look, I knew this was the spot. The flowers were only half of it. The light here was rich and diffused, strained through a cluster of trees into something delicate rather than harsh. Summer light in Perth can be brutal, so finding this pocket of tree-filtered light felt like a small miracle. This is the light I seek every single time, this type of light never competes with the people in the frame and lets the focus rest entirely on them

Two sets of outfits, one storybook

For the first set, we wanted the children to be the whole story, so we chose neutral outfits and kept the background simple and free of distraction. You can see how the light works here, illuminating their faces and eyes while also wrapping a golden halo around their hair. This gorgeous pink Dollcake dress is available in my client’s closet in size 3.

Giving children something to hold or do usually buys you a few seconds of stillness, which is often all it takes for a beautiful frame. Then we changed the kids into a second set of outfits chosen to tie in with the yellow flowers, for a more whimsical, sun-drenched feel.

My Bespoke Children Sessions are devoted to your kids, and that is where most of our time goes. But I always invite parents in for a few portraits at the end, this beautiful mum was so glad to get in some of the photos.
